David J. Seeley, an attorney for Marlon Brando's estate said the family had no funeral plans yet, adding, "This is a sad and difficult time for the family."
Brando had tried to kickstart an acting career, like his father, but had been sidelined because of his legal troubles, particularly the 1990 manslaughter charge concerning the death of his sister's boyfriend.
In 2005, he was charged with two counts of spousal abuse against his then-wife Deborah Brando. He pleaded no contest and was placed on three years' probation. He also was ordered to undergo drug and alcohol rehabilitation, as well as a spousal abuse prevention program.
